HOLY WEEK AND EASTER 2021

March 23rd 2020, the start of the first Lockdown. Two weeks later we celebrated Easter with all churches closed. We met, like Jesus’ disciples, behind closed doors.

Move forward to 2021. This year churches are open but under restrictions. Social distancing of at least 2 meteres must be kept and Covid restrictions must be followed at all times. We still cannot sing our favourite hymns. Clergy are enouraged to keep services as short as possible and, indeed, to hold online services where possible. Holy Week and Easter this year will not be the normal we observed before the pandemic. Some people will be delighted the churches are open at this Holy time and they are able to worship together, others may feel the risk of joining a group is still great and feel a need to join together online. As Father Philip said last year when churches reopened:

“For some of us the desire to return to worhip in church may be to do so as soon as possible, for others it might be sometime before people feel they are able to make that step for whatever reason. There is no judgement upon anyone one way or the other. Please be assured that on this shared journey together in the restoration of church buildings to acts of worship, as the family of faith, we move forward in unity, in understanding, in faith and in family love”.

Through Holy Week and Easter this year services are arranged both for those who wish to worship at church and those who wish to worship at home. Wherever you will be observing Holy Week and Easter this year you are in our thoughts as we proceed through the reflections of the week.
